SUPPORTING EACH OTHER

Many things have happened since we last met as a “class”: births, deaths, sickness, graduations, promotions, retirements, etc. In all instances, information was by word of mouth. To support each other in good times and bad, we are divising a system to keep each of us current on the activities of fellow class members. To do this, we need to revise outdated information so that we can send cards at appropriate times, and just keep in contact. This bi-annual newsletter will be one method of keeping informed. We have put together a “Fact Form” for you to submit your ideas.

Please submit the “Fact Form” as soon as possible. Looking forward to hearing from you.

BI-STATE ACTIVITIES IN THE WORKS?

We are considering a joint venture with Sumner’s class of 1958 regarding picnics, parties, etc. Give us your ideas.

AN HISTORICAL FOOTNOTE CONCERNING OUR CLASS

In 1954 the supreme court passed the historical “Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education” decision. That was the freshman year of this class. The next year the Kansas City, Missouri School Board of Education assigned the African American students to the schools in their neighborhoods. However, the students of Lincoln High School were allowed to continue at that school since they had started there. Lincoln and R.T. Coles High Schools were the high schools for African American schools at that time. And many chose to remain at Lincoln. R.T. Coles was a manual arts and trade school and was closed, sending its students to Manual High School, its white counter part.

Consequently, the graduates from this class decided to hold joint reunions in commemoration of the fact that most had originally been together at R.T. Coles in the eight grade—where all African American students had to attend for that grade during those years.
