We are considering a joint venture with Sumners class of 1958 regarding picnics, parties, etc. Give us your ideas.
In 1954 the supreme court passed the historical Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education decision. That was the freshman year of this class. The next year the Kansas City, Missouri School Board of Education assigned the African American students to the schools in their neighborhoods. However, the students of Lincoln High School were allowed to continue at that school since they had started there. Lincoln and R.T. Coles High Schools were the high schools for African American schools at that time. And many chose to remain at Lincoln. R.T. Coles was a manual arts and trade school and was closed, sending its students to Manual High School, its white counter part.
Consequently, the graduates from this class decided to hold joint reunions in commemoration of the fact that most had originally been together at R.T. Coles in the eight gradewhere all African American students had to attend for that grade during those years.
