A Brief History

Christ Our Redeemer African Methodist Episcopal Church was born out of a need for an A.M.E. witness in the South Kansas City /Grandview Community. Formerly known as the Grandview A.M.E. Church or the Grandview Mission, it’s founding Pastor is the Rev. Ronald L. Williams, the then pastor of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Under the able leadership of Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson and Presiding Elder E. Lewis Branch, the first worship service of this new congregation was held on November 20, 1988 in the sanctuary of Longview United Methodist Church. Both Presiding Elder E. Lewis Branch, and Presiding Elder P. Albert WIlliams of the Kansas City North District shared in the service. The message was brought by Rev. Ronald Williams.

The First Year
The first Lay Witness Sunday message was delivered by Mrs. Evelyn Winfrey Robinson, a member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church. Rev. Williams applied and was approved a grant from the 5th District Economic Development Fund (EDF) in the name of the new congregation to purchase property at 9000 Longview Road. Rosalyn Richburg and Rebecca Starling began service as youth ushers. Florence Winfrey, a member of Ward Chapel , served as the first Stewardness. The women of the church organized an Easter Egg Hunt for approximately 30 children on the playground area.

On October 5, 1989, the congregation was admitted into the Northwest Missouri Conference by Bishop Anderson. The members of the 108th session of the northwest Missouri Annual Conference officially named our congregation Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church, and placed it in the Kansas City South District. Bishop Anderson assigned Rev. Williams, Pastor and Rev. Rose Mary Rucker, the Associate Pastor.

The first major event of the 1989–90 Conference Year was the First Anniversary held November 19, 1989 at Smith-Hale Junior High School. The property at 9000 Longview Road was dedicated and charter members were presented with Membership Certificates. Rev. Rucker delivered the message.

Rev. Williams spotted a “FOR SALE” on a church at 8607 Longview Road. Presiding Elder Branch, Rev. WIlliams and members of the Conference Board of Trustees visited the property and they concurred : This would be a good home for Christ Our Redeemer. The church congregation raised money for the down payment and closing cost through stewardship commitments, and again solicited and was blessed with the support of Mr. Willie B. Macon, EDF Treasurer and the EDF Board who loaned the church the remaining money needed for down payment.

The present facility was dedicated and a cornerstone was laid on the 31st day of March 1990.
