Church History

Stragglers Camp, the beginning of a new era for the Christian movement through the aggressive and courageous mind of Rev. Clark Moore, assisted by the Rev. Lovelace, brought Second Baptist Church and Allen Chapel, A.M.E. Church into existence, October,1863.

In 1865, the Rev. Joseph Strother became the second pastor of Second Baptist. The church was moved to walnut Grove - later changed to Tenth and Charlotte where the membership worshipped in a frame building.

In 1869, Rev. Strother resigned and Rev. Henry Robinson became the third pastor. During his administration the first brick unit was erected. After the resignation of Rev. Robinson, the Rev. Samuel W. Bacote began his tenure in March 1895. An organizer and builder. He was instrumental in the erection of a super-structure - later destroyed by fire. In 1941 a new edifice was acquired at Tenth and Park. On April 30, 1946 Rev. Bacote expired. On May 2, 1946 Rev. Emerson E. Chappelle became the fifth pastor of second Baptist Church. He inaugurated the Home coming Plan and on February 17, 1963 a motorcade led Second Baptist into its new location at 39th and Monroe. After serving 35 and one-half years, Rev. Chappelle retired. He presently is Pastor Emeritus of Second Baptist Church.

On December 6, 1981. Rev. David O. Shipley became the sixth pastor of our historic Second Baptist Church. Continuing the Christian work which had been established. Pastor Shipley spearheaded many improvements in the organization and administration of the church. A few of his accomplishments are: renovation of the church building and grounds in a three phase program, purchasing additional property, reorganization of the service programs and a video and tape ministry.
