For the first time in 45 years, the W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center has an opportunity to provide services to the community in a wonderfully designed building intended for academic and skills training. On August 26, 2016, we completed the purchase of the Milton Moore Elementary School. The building just over 100 years old is structurally sound and has served us well over the past 4 years. We are proud to launch the Future in Our Hands Campaign to secure $1.2 million in funding to complete the renovation of the facility.
The project will proceed in two phases:

Phase One - $450,000
Phase One will focus on repair, replacement and rehabilitation of the original structure and will include;  exterior lighting and entrance ways, restrooms, carpentry work, audiovisual systems, remote access & safety and security, plumbing, elevator maintenance, retaining wall repair, signage, landscaping, general carpentry, kitchen equipment and  HVAC for administrative offices, library, computer lab, cafeteria and dining area. This phase will also include a complete repurposing of the playground to provide a physical space for the community to enjoy with designated areas to play, exercise, entertain or to commune with nature!

Phase Two - $800,000
Phase Two will focus on a complete overhaul and installation of zoned, split unit central heating and air conditioning, along with remaining infrastructure, mechanical and technological upgrades.

Having a facility with expanded and dedicated space, will allow us to serve more students and offer additional programming to meet the needs of this community including:

  • Summer academic and social enrichment programs
  • Service learning programs
  • Workforce Development
  • Cultural/art enrichment
  • Community engagement
  • Adult education – literacy, technology, GED preparation
  • Access to technology and computer literacy

Phase One is completely dependent from phase two. Upon completion of Phase one, we will have a beautifully renovated space that this community can be proud of.  Successful completion of phase two will be the icing on the cake! A new HVAC system will result in improve efficiency and a reduction in utility and maintenance cost. Most importantly, the building would be fully functional year around!

Since relocating to this facility, we have experienced a significant demand for space usage from the community. What we’ve learned is that this neighborhood is full of individuals and organizations looking for meeting space, event space, computer access, job-training, faith-based missions and entrepreneurial exploration. The majority of contacts are individuals and small groups with limited to no resources.
