Community Involvement is the foundation of the W.E.B. DuBois Learning
Center. Believing in organized self-help, Learning Center volunteers are
the backbone of the organization. Volunteers dedicated to delivering quality
service to the community, spend countless hours tutoring children, organizing
events, and identifying resources. Because teaching is our main service
and the area which requires the most support, there are always openings
for dedicated individuals. Interested persons can best support this area
by volunteering a few hours per week as classroom instructors. Other important
volunteer positions include administrators, consultants clerical workers,
researchers, and classroom assistants.
There are few supplementary programs designed to meet the demand of the growing number of parents seeking tutorial assistance for their children. In talking with principals, counselors and teachers in the Kansas City School District, they invariably concurred with the need for individualized tutorial assistance and have developed a working relationship with the W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center.
The W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center has traditionally served a community that requires a high volume of educational assistance. With the current state of the economy many parents cannot afford private education or pay for tutorial services. Therefore, our program serves as an alternative for those economically disadvantaged parents who want a quality education for their children.
