About the Author
Leon Dixon, Jr., is a co-founder and chairman of the board of directors
of the W.E.B.DuBois Learning Center. He is a charter member of the Kansas
City Chapter of the National Black United Front (NBUF) and the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He holds a Bachelor and Master of
Science degree in mathematics from Texas Southern University, and is a
retired mathematician and computational scientist from AlliedSignal,
Inc., Federal Manufacturing & Technologies in Kansas City. |

In 1973, together with William "Bill" Grace, Dixon established the W.E.B.
DuBois Learning Center as an independent institution to provide tutorial
services to elementary and secondary school children in the Greater Kansas
City area. Since then, the Learning Center has provided assistance to
thousands of our children through after-school sessions in computer science,
reading, science, and Saturday morning sessions in mathematics. This has
been accomplished through the recruitment of community volunteers interested
in helping teach and mentor our youth. The Learning Center, which relies on
community contributions for financial support, has grown from offering its
services through Black churches in the community to holding sessions in its
own facility at 5501 Cleveland , in Kansas City, Missouri. |
